The Challenge
The client required an accurate wildlife survey to establish baseline red deer numbers across the island and support the development of a future deer management plan.
Understanding population density and herd structure was essential to inform future deer management decisions and assess potential impacts on vegetation and habitat regeneration.
The project presented several operational challenges:
- Remote island access requiring boat transportation
- Limited weather windows for safe drone deployment
- The need to minimise disturbance to wildlife
- Large areas of difficult terrain
- Full survey coverage required across the island
- Maintaining thermal detectability as weather conditions changed
Weather conditions at the time of the survey included north-westerly winds of approximately 8m/s and light cloud cover during the morning. By midday, increasing sunshine created more challenging thermal survey conditions as ground temperatures rose.
Traditional ground-based wildlife monitoring would have required significantly more time and resources, making advanced thermal imaging the most effective solution.

Our Approach
Boddy Environmental deployed two specialist drone teams equipped with:
- DJI Matrice 30T
- DJI Matrice 4T
- High-resolution thermal imaging camera systems
- 200x zoom RGB imaging capability
To ensure accurate wildlife observation and complete coverage, the island was divided into four separate survey plots.
Systematic grid-based flight plans were developed to achieve:
- Full island coverage
- Consistent data collection
- Regulatory compliance
- Minimal wildlife disturbance
- Accurate thermal detection of deer activity
Survey operations were conducted in close collaboration with the estate manager, with drones flown at appropriate altitudes to minimise disturbance to red deer populations.
The use of advanced thermal imaging allowed surveyors to detect animals concealed within vegetation and difficult terrain, delivering a more accurate population assessment than traditional survey methods.

Wildlife Observation, Mapping & Data Capture
The survey generated a comprehensive range of outputs to support future wildlife management decisions.
Deliverables included:
- Wildlife observation points
- Thermal heat density maps
- Deer distribution mapping
- Population density calculations
- GIS mapping outputs
- 3D visualisation models
These outputs provided the client with a clear understanding of deer movement patterns, habitat use, and population distribution across the island.
The detailed mapping also established an important baseline dataset to support future deer management plan reviews and monitoring programmes.

Red Deer Population & Deer Management Findings
The wildlife survey recorded a total of:
- 94 Red Deer (Cervus elaphus)
The survey identified a population structure dominated by:
- Red hinds accompanied by last year’s calves
- Individual stags
- Small stag groups distributed across the island
The detailed analysis enabled accurate classification of stag and hind numbers, with further imagery review conducted post-survey to identify younger animals and provide a more complete population profile.
The results provided valuable baseline information for future deer management planning and population monitoring.
Because the survey area was restricted to an island environment, expansion of the survey boundary was not possible. However, future monitoring during the rutting season was recommended to assess potential seasonal fluctuations in red deer numbers.

Herbivore Impact Assessment Recommendations
In addition to population monitoring, the project identified opportunities for further ecological assessment.
A future Herbivore Impact Assessment was recommended to evaluate:
- Browsing pressure on regenerating vegetation
- Woodland and habitat recovery potential
- Long-term ecological impacts
- Grazing intensity across the island
Combining population data with a dedicated Herbivore Impact Assessment would provide a more complete understanding of how red deer are influencing habitat condition and ecological resilience.
This approach would support evidence-based wildlife management and help inform future land management decisions.

Key Insights
The survey delivered several important operational and ecological insights:
- Drone-based wildlife surveys provide efficient coverage of remote landscapes
- Advanced thermal imaging significantly improves deer detection accuracy
- Detailed stag and hind counts support more informed deer management decisions
- Seasonal surveys can improve understanding of population fluctuations
- Combining deer monitoring with habitat assessment delivers stronger wildlife management outcomes
- Remote island surveys can be completed quickly with minimal environmental disturbance
Results & Outcomes
The project delivered accurate and actionable survey data that enabled the client to begin developing a robust deer management plan.
Key outcomes included:
- Accurate red deer population counts
- Detailed stag and hind analysis
- Wildlife observation mapping
- Deer density calculations
- Spatial distribution data
- Recommendations for future monitoring
- Recommendations for a Herbivore Impact Assessment
- Comprehensive report delivered within 3 days
The survey established a valuable baseline dataset that can be used to measure future changes in deer numbers and habitat condition.
By using advanced thermal imaging and drone technology, the survey was completed far more efficiently than traditional ground-based census methods.

Impact
This wildlife survey provided the client with reliable population data and actionable recommendations to support long-term deer management objectives.
By combining drone technology, thermal imaging camera systems, and detailed wildlife observation techniques, the project:
- Delivered accurate red deer population data
- Improved understanding of stag and hind distribution
- Supported future deer management planning
- Identified opportunities for a Herbivore Impact Assessment
- Reduced uncertainty around population density
- Minimized disturbance to wildlife during data collection
The project highlights the growing role of advanced thermal imaging in supporting effective wildlife management and ecological decision-making across remote landscapes throughout Scotland.
